「Creativity in a forest-dwelling society」

“Need” arises in “a situation in which something is necessary
or must be done”. Indeed, human beings think, create, and invent
when needs emerge.
I was born in an urban area with public services, such as markets,
hospitals, schools, and so on. Whenever I needed something as a
child I asked my parents for permission and money and bought the
necessary items at the market. This habit continues to the present
day and has led to an almost complete absence of the need to engage
in creative work to meet my basic needs; instead, I spend considerable
amounts of money buying what I need. During my first experience
with field research, I was very impressed by the self-produced bamboo
appliances of the Karen people, who sustain their livelihoods by
practicing swidden agriculture and following a forest-dwelling lifestyle
in remote hills.
My study site is located in the Bago Mountains, Myanmar. Undulating
hills with elevations of less than 1000 m are home to the Karen people,
who cultivate upland rice and subsistence crops using slash-and-burn
agriculture. As this community is located about 54 km from a small town
and is situated on a mountain road, it never operated a cash economy
until the early 2000s. At one point in my fieldwork, I entered a swidden
hut for an interview and found a man sitting and holding a tobacco pipe
made from bamboo. In response to my curiosity about that bamboo tobacco
pipe, he welcomed me with a cup of black tea. I was surprised again,
this time about the smoky brown bamboo cups and the teapot handle made
from bamboo. Probably noticing my interest in bamboo tools, the man
showed me more bamboo utensils that he had made and explained how he had
built a bamboo house with no nails. During my fieldwork, I often observed
households with a wide range of appliances made from bamboo. In fact,
despite their lack of formal education and vocational training, the Karen
people have created a way to survive in the forests and have invented
the items they need for everyday life. When I shared my impressions about
this adaptive use of bamboo, I received bamboo souvenirs: a pounding stick
and a flat ladle, which are now used in my kitchen in Kyoto.
Nowadays, a few grocery stores and mobile truck shops have made modern
commodities, especially canned food, kitchen utensils, and household
appliances, accessible to the Karen community. For instance, cylindrical
bamboo containers have been replaced with plastic buckets for carrying
water. Fortunately, however, because of the limited cash resources of
local households, many traditional tools are still used. I wonder whether
the residents of my study site will find creative and unique ways to
maintain their traditions; I hope to return to this community to find out.

アジア・アフリカ地域研究研究科では先日、博士予備論文公聴会が開催
されました。過去約20年間の論文題目をみると、自然環境や第一次産業
をテーマにする研究は、全体の5分の1から4分の1程度です。研究テーマ
は、学生の関心や教員のアドバイスとともに、調査地で出会う特徴的な
物事にも影響を受けます。アジア・アフリカ諸国の環境と暮らしが急速
に変容するなか、20年後の博士予備論文公聴会では、どのような発表題
