「African Area Studies 'at home' in Uganda」

          I joined Kyoto University as a MEXT scholarship student in April 2015. First, I was enrolled in the intensive Japanese Language course for six months, then I was enrolled as a research student in the Division of African Area Studies for another six months starting October 2015. I spent most of my time as a research student reviewing literature. I was impressed by the number of resources that I had access to while at Kyoto University.
          I decided on Uganda as my research site. I was relatively new to the concept of Area Studies, so I chose to start with the familiar. I returned to Uganda for fieldwork for the first time in February 2016. I conducted research with women living in Mukono and in Kampala. I chose these villages because I had sisters that were living in these areas after marriage who were happy to introduce me to their friends and acquaintances.
          Since it was my first-time returning home in almost a year, I noticed some things that I might not have realized before I left Uganda. I observed that many women spent a significant amount of their waking time in activities that involved much sitting. In addition, I noticed that the portion sizes of the food consumed appeared much bigger than I had become used to seeing in Japan. Lastly, having had a cultural shock in Japan about how much women were concerned with avoiding weight gain, I had a reverse cultural shock on arriving in Uganda when I noticed how much less women were concerned with avoiding weight gain. I became eager to examine the lifestyles of women living in urban Uganda as the research subject of my doctoral dissertation. Thanks to the fieldwork style in ASAFAS, I was able to periodically visit the field and return to Japan to consider my research data, before returning to the field again. I visited Uganda seven times (14 months in total) before writing my dissertation. I graduated on March 24, 2021 and had the honorable opportunity of receiving my degree certificate directly from the president of Kyoto University. I have been immeasurably supported. I am grateful.

「子ネコがサルにさらわれた！」

電話が鳴ると
「おい、サルの研究者だな？！今すぐ来い！大変だ！」と慌てた声が言いました。2018年、タンザニアのザンジバル島で人里に出没するザンジバルアカコロブスという霊長類のフィールド調査を始めたばかりの時でした。
電話をくれた友人が働くロッジに大慌てでたどり着いた私は裏の森に連れて行かれました。友人は5-6m上の樹上を指さして言いました。
「あいつだ、あのサルがウチの子ネコをさらったんだ」
一瞬、耳を疑いながらも、目を凝らすと確かに樹の上でコロブスのメスが子ネコを抱えています。子ネコは時々ニャーニャーと鳴きながらも、コロブスの腕に抱えられたまま枝から枝へと森の奥に連れ去られていきました。数分の出来事でした。いったい何が起きたのか？頭の中は疑問だらけで混乱したままです。
しかし、こうして常識を覆されることが、フィールドでは何故か病みつきになるのです。

2021年度が始まりました。学位授与と入学は対面で式がとり行われ、歓びを分ち合ったのもつかの間、現在は第4の波が押し寄せ、再び講義はオンライン形式に戻りました。1年前は慣れない活動制限への対応に追われていましたが、今ではこうした状況だからこそできる研究教育活動も随分と整備・開拓してきたと思います。一方、ワクチン接種が進んでいる国々では感染が著しく抑えられ、正常を取り戻しつつある様子をニュースからうかがえることも多くなりました。長いトンネルの終わりを告げる予兆であると信じてやみません。活動制限は繰り返されますが、そろそろポストコロナを意識して新たな研究の準備に取り掛かりたいと思っています。（H.S.）
